Lennox & Addington Residence - Carleton University
The new residence is directly connected to common shared space with other adjacent residence buildings covering 174,310 SF area.
The shared space which was also renovated under the project included food services, recreation facilities and student services. A second lower-level connection is a below grade tunnel system which has access to other buildings on campus. The structural design required creative solutions due to the proximity of the 3 adjacent buildings and the existence of Leda clay consisting in the Ottawa River Valley basin.
A concrete matt was placed as the clay was dewatered. The stabilized coped Leda clay was then topped by a raft foundation which supports the 10 storey structure. Mechanical systems use a high efficiency central and dedicated outdoor air supply unit with energy recovery, VAV boxes with energy recovery serviced each unit. Electrical energy savings was achieved by the use of LED lighting and no occupancy controls. The residence has been designed to meet three Globes Standard for energy use.
